Fall is coming and we are getting in the swing of things at the Allen Community Outreach—golf swing that is. We had so much fun last year that we decided to make it an annual event so please join us on September 17, for the Second Annual ACO Golf Classic at the Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club. Registration will be at 10 a.m. and a box lunch will be provided. Participants can hit the driving range at 11:30 to warm up and a shotgun start will be at 12:30 p.m. Format will be the four-player scramble and the day will wind down with a BBQ buffet, awards ceremony and raffle drawing.
"We are hoping to better our inaugural tournament but that will be a tough act to follow. We had great sponsors, great attendance and perfect weather last year," explains Bill Staub, an avid golfer and the ACO board member chairing the event. "Everyone I heard from said it was one of the best golf tournaments they have been to in a long time. But we feel confident that with the ACO staff and volunteers, and a little heavenly help that it can be done."
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the many programs of the Allen Community Outreach. Celebrating its twenty-first year serving Allen, Lucas and Fairview, the ACO helps families bridge the gap in difficult times with rent and utility assistance. This assistance last year prevented 77% of our clients from becoming another homeless sta¬tistic. Other programs: providing infor¬mation and referrals to needed services; job coun¬seling and placement; school supply distribution; and Thanksgiving food and Christmas toy and gift distribution.
"Real people helping real people" get back on their feet is the ACO’s motto and our programs are living proof. Meals on Wheels & More is a perfect example. Originally meant for persons over age 60 with limited mobility, the ACO’s Meals on Wheels & More program benefits those under 60, like the client who lives alone and broke both of her legs.
The Allen Community Outreach knows that at any point in time, circumstances such as a change in the economic environment or a natural disaster can put a family in crisis. That is why the work is vital to our city. And its success can be attributed directly to the support of our volunteers in both the business and private sector, who over the years have given generously of their time and money.
"It’s not too late to get involved and if anyone would like to be a named sponsor, hole sponsor or just a single golfer, everyone is welcome and we promise you a good time for a good cause" says Bill Staub. So please join us for the Second Annual ACO Golf Classic. You can register (securely) online at www.acocares.org or contact us at 972-727-9131. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
